Friday 10th January
There are no new tasks set for today which will give the children the opportunity to complete any of this week's unfinished tasks and read for pleasure.
We would just like to take the opportunity today to thank everyone for the good wishes and lovely gifts we received for Christmas. It was very generous of you. We hope that the New Year will bring you all many blessings. With our best wishes, Miss Rhodes and Mr Greener.
Theatre Trip Monday 13th January
As long as the school is open on Monday, the theatre trip will be going ahead. Please therefore make sure you are in school no later than 8.45 and have a small snack for the interval. For example, a piece of fruit, a health bar or a bag of crisps.
Please note that we will not be setting homework for the weekend.
However, if you have completed the following tasks, we would like to share them as a class to wrap up our History topic so please bring them in on Tuesday.
1 History booklet about one or more of the air raid shelters. (See work set on Tuesday)
3 Leaflet about women's roles in the war and letter. (See work set on Wednesday)
4 Poster about women joining the services. (See work set on Wednesday)
Also if you want to share your snow or wizard writing we would love to see it.
Thursday 9th January - Snow Day
For the maths worksheet you only need to complete one of the sheets, the more stars at the bottom of the page the more of a challenge they will be. Please attempt the level of sheet that matches your confidence level after working through the powerpoint! Good luck!
Reading Comprehension - Please choose from 1, 2 or 3 stars.
It is all about a heroic dog's actions in the Second World War.
Grammar
Today you will be revising main clauses and subordinate clauses.
Work through the powerpoint, then do the quiz powerpoint.
Afterwards complete the worksheets and the test.
Writing Task
Use the picture below as a stimulus for your writing.
Imagine you are visiting a house where strange things keep happening. Use the sentence starter below and the picture idea to continue writing up to a page of writing to describe what you see and what happens next. Remember to check spelling, punctuation, vocabulary and paragraphing.
Opening: Something peculiar was definitely happening. What were those strange smells emanating from the room? Peter tentatively approached and very slowly turned the old brass handle.

Snow Day Work
As we will be finishing our fantastic History topic this week, it would be a real shame if we didn't look at the fascinating role of women during the war.
Some of your English work today will come out of the information you will learn this morning. You will be amazed at the variety of roles women were offered. Prepare to be impressed! This was the work of your great-grandmothers and other female relatives.
I remember a lady in her sixties called Olive who was in her late teens when the war started and was called up. Because she was unmarried, she was able to be moved around the country. She manned anti-aircraft guns around the coast with other young women. She said that it was her first chance to move away from home and that she loved the comradeship of the experience. It had made her much more independent and confident and had allowed her to travel, something that she couldn't have imagined doing on her own before. However, she said that manning the guns was hard work and rather terrifying.
So remember that these experiences were real when you read about them in the powerpoints. Enjoy!
Please note that there are only 2 powerpoints to read.
1a,1b,2a and 3 are all one but wouldn't load as one - hence the split!
Now that you have read the powerpoints and completed the quiz, you are ready to complete your writing tasks. Please do these to the best of your ability and bring them into school tomorrow. (The snow cannot last forever!)
You will need to use the information to write a factfile about women's roles. You can download the template provided or create your own. Either way write small to include as much information as possible.
The second task is to write a letter as a woman who has been given a new role. You will need to decide carefully about which role interests you the most. Possibly do some more research and then write a reply to your aunt's letter below.
Don't forget to check punctuation, spelling, word choice and the sense of your sentences.
Aim high!
Art Task
Now that you have watched the powerpoints, you should have a good idea of how the adverts persuaded women to join different services.
Your Task: Design and colour a poster to persuade women to join one of the services.
Look back at the adverts used in the powerpoints to give you some ideas.
Bring this into school tomorrow.
Tuesday 7th January
SNOW DAY
As you may have some spare time today, why not start your model World War II shelter which was set as homework before Christmas. The deadline is 17th January.
It could be an Anderson, Morrison, Public, Underground or Stockport Air Raid shelter. Look online for design ideas.
Please don’t make it any bigger than A3 in size!
You can use any materials eg papier mache, card, wood, etc. It is up to you. Don’t forget to decorate and colour appropriately.
You should also prepare a short booklet all about your type of shelter or include facts around your model.
Relatives are welcome to help.
Writing
Make a booklet about either one or all of the shelters used in the Second World War.
(Anderson, Morrison, Underground and Public)
The booklet should include the following:
a) Bold colourful headings and subheadings
b) Paragraphs of writing
c) A labelled diagram of the shelter and / or uploaded picture.
The information should include:
6th January Snow Day
SNOW DAY - Writing, Reading and Grammar Work
If you can, please print off the work. Answers are provided to mark your work.
Snow Writing
For those of you who feel particularly inspired, why not have a go at writing a Snow poem or snow description and bring it in to school tomorrow. We would love to hear the results.
No doubt you will be outside playing in the snow, building snowmen, having fights, sledging etc. Why not use that as your inspiration for a descriptive or action-packed poem.
Think about including descriptive adjectives, alliteration, a simile or personification techniques.
Here are some words and phrases that can be used to describe snow but you can probably think of many more. You could do an acrostic/ tanka/free verse poem. Rhyming if you feel up to it!
