Welcome to St Alban's website!

Friday

We have set out each day similar to how we would work in school, but feel free to swap lessons around.

Please remember to have breaks, snacks and a good lunch to keep you going!

Where possible, we have included answers to the work. We encourage the children to use these to mark their work after they have tried their hardest on it. This way, they can see where they've done well and discuss what they found tricky with an adult at home, or email it to their Year 5 teachers so they can help them with it. Remember, it is not about getting perfect marks but trying your best. The best learning happens when we make mistakes. Keep up the fantastic work everyone smiley

9 - 9:30 - SPaG (Adverbials for linking sentences part 2)

Complete pages 5-8 of the ‘adverbials for linking sentences’ booklet.

For the first page, have a look at some reading books at home and try to find at least 1 example of each – even better if you find more! (For number you can include adverbials of frequency such as often, rarely etc.)

To fill in the rest of the columns you can use the adverbials mixed up mat. You will have to decide which columns they belong in though. Try to find at least 8 adverbials for each column.

Answers for pages 6-8 can be found on pages 14-16 of the booklet.

9.30 - 10.30 - Short Burst Write (Behind The Secret Door)

The purpose of a short burst write (SBW) is to give you the chance to let your creative juices flow and apply everything that you know about what makes good writing to your own piece of work.

We aim to do one SBW every week, this week your SBW it titled 'Behind The Secret Door'.

Imagine that you come across a secret door.
What will happen when you open it?

Tasks

Start by opening up the 'Secret door' presentation. Look at the images of the doors. Where do they belong? Where do they go to? How do they make you feel?

Next, open up 'Behind the Secret door activity sheets'. These sheets will help you plan and write your work. You should aim to create at least 1 really good, detailed paragraph. We want to see you using adverbials to link your paragraphs, you've got lots of ideas from your SPaG work this week, and there is another adverbials word mat to give you some more inspiration.

The Activity Sheets

  • For the first page, 'Gathering ideas', feel free to include drawings. Use the questions on the page to help prompt ideas.
  • The next page, 'Ideas organiser', will help you to plan out your story, giving it a structure.
  • After that is your first draft, see how your ideas come together. Spend time up-levelling this draft, adding in missing details and improving spelling, punctuation and vocabulary.
  • Finally, try writing your paragraph(s) in full, using you neatest handwriting.

Don't aim to write a whole story. It would be better to plan, draft and write one or two really good, detailed paragraphs (with lots of description, detail, good spelling and good punctuation) then rush through a big story that has lots of mistakes in it. For extra ideas there is also a word mat for using your senses to describe settings.

We hope you have fun writing and look forward to seeing what you create.

11 - 12 - Maths
Please see your maths group for your maths work today.

Main Class Group (Bus Stop Division L2)

This lesson follows on from yesterday's teaching and gives you chance to practice and apply what you have been learning about division and using the bus stop method.

Everyone works at different paces, try to complete at least the guided practice and workbook questions. If you have time to try the problem solving questions too then that is fantastic.

Mrs Ghosh's Maths Group (Dividing by 3)

Please download the presentation for today's work. Remember to do your best and email your teacher if you are finding anything too tricky.

12 - 12.30 - Quiet reading

Unwind from your busy morning by getting lost in a book of your own choice.

Before Lunch Prayer

Bless us O Lord,

and these thy gifts,

for which we are about to receive,

through Jesus Christ Our Lord,

Amen.

After Lunch Prayer

Thankyou God for the food we have eaten,

thankyou for our family and friends,

thankyou God for everything.

Amen.

1.30 - 3 - Where in the World?

Some of you have already started looking at our place of interest for this geography unit. It’s in Europe, it’s very mountainous and in the winter it is covered in snow. Do you know where I am talking about? The Alpines!

Your geography task today is to create a presentation on the Alpine region.
Your presentation can be hand drawn, videoed or made on PowerPoint, or it could combine all three!
It should include:

  • Where in the world it is (with maps)
  • What countries it goes through. It would be great to have some interesting facts on these countries.
  • What makes the landscape interesting?
  • What languages are spoken there?
  • Is it famous for any particular landmarks?
  • Is it a popular place for people to visit? If so why?
  • Any other interesting facts you can find.

We look forward to seeing what you find out and how you present it!

End Of Day Prayer

Spirit of God,

Come live in me,

Make me the person you want me to be,

humble and pure,

faithful and free,

Spirit of God come live in me.

Amen.
