St. Joan of Arc, often referred to as 'The Maid of Orleans', is a national heroine of France. Born as a peasant girl she, believing that she was acting under divine guidance, led the French army towards a momentous victory in Orleans that stopped an English attempt to conquer France during the Hundred Years' War.
At the time, Joan was fighting for a Catholic France against English aggressors. A year after this great victory, Joan was unfortunately captured and killed by the English. She does however, remain a national hero of France as a result of the tremendous courage and strength that was required for her to work towards fighting against the English. Joan's strength and bravery came from the guidance she received from her contact with, among others, St. Michael, St. Catherine of Alexandria and St. Margaret.
We celebrate the feast day of St. Joan on the 30th May each year.
